On February 2nd, Society HAE in collaboration with 14 African artists, designers, filmmakers and musicians will transform the Beaux-Arts Court of the Brooklyn Museum in to an unprecedented pop-up art experience.
AFRIKA21 @ Brooklyn Museum celebrates Africa’s next wave of musicians, artists and makers while showcasing the work of individuals who are re-framing how Africa is perceived in the 21st century. Through interactive pop up “experience pods” AFRIKA21 will provide attendees with an opportunity to experience contemporary African culture in a dynamic setting that fosters dialogue and encourages active participation. Each “pop up” serves as an activity pod where attendees can gather to watch film shorts curated by African Film Festival Inc., virtually tour the studios of African artists, listen/watch a LIVE broadcast of the AFRIKA21 radio show, shop the AFRIKA21 Pop Up Shop for African inspired clothing and gift items, view interactive fashion displays or pose for group portraits by award-winning Sierra Leonean photographer Delphine Fawundu.
Featured designers include Zimbabwean women’s wear designer Farai Simoyi, Kenyan menswear design duo Blackbird Jeans, Nigerian women’s wear designer Washington Roberts and Brooklyn-based designer Harriet’s By Hekima. Virtual Studio/Gallery tours via Google+ Hangout Stations will be led by the Nigerian based African Artist Foundation, Rwandan collective illume creative and Kenyan based art-focused website AfricanDigitalArt.com. Sounds provided by DJ Frei, BBox Radio and Nigerian soul singer Denitia Odigie.
AFRIKA21 @ Brooklyn Museum will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 7pm to 9pm as part of the “Target First Saturdays” programming at the Brooklyn Museum. On view will be African Innovations. A complete reinstallation of roughly 200 works from the Brooklyn Museum’s world-renowned collection of African art, African Innovations is organized with a particular focus on the aesthetic, social, political, and cosmological problems addressed by African artists through their work.
AFRIKA21 @ Brooklyn Museum will be part of the Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday programming. The AFRIKA21 program at the Brooklyn Museum is supported by Arik Air and the Brooklyn Arts Council.
