The 2013 edition of the Lagos Fashion and Design Week got off to a roaring start with a couple of designers making their debut on that platform. London export Samson Soboye sent out lanky boys onto the runway in full prints, cleverly styled and Weizdhum Franklyn - whom i personally refer to as the Nigerian John Galliano- sent out models in beautiful clothes that barely covered their essential bits. Weizdhum Franklyn is one to watch for the future and his eponymous label would probably be able to do a lot more with extra funding.
Sunny Rose, Christie Brown and Alter Ego kept things sleek and classy with lady like cuts but for some reason most designers were showing a lot of skin on the runway. Wonder if this is in revolt to the cultural norm that expects a woman to be covered up from heels to the neck. The designers literally threw culture into some imaginary pit and presented bits that flattered at the right places - if you got that model body tho…hit the gym ladies :p - and in general the vibe i got from day 1 was upbeat. Come back tomorrow for a review of day 2.
